Methodology

How the index works

Every bar gets five sub-scores from 0 to 10. Four are tasted and judged by our editors; one is calculated from the nutrition label. The sub-scores are weighted and added up into a single index from 0 to 100. Nothing else moves the number — sponsorship included.

Taste

30% weight

Straight-up flavour. Would you eat it if it had no protein in it?

Crunch

20% weight

Crunch, snap, chew. Crisp layers score high, chalk and sludge score low.

Nutrition

20% weight

Calculated: protein per 100 kcal, penalised for sugar, rewarded for fibre.

Aftertaste

15% weight

How long the protein aftertaste hangs around. Clean finish wins.

Fullness

15% weight

How long it holds hunger off after eating it.

The formula

Index = taste×3 + crunch×2 + nutrition×2 + aftertaste×1.5 + fullness×1.5

Scores are recalculated automatically whenever a rating or a nutrition figure changes, so the table always reflects the current numbers.
